A 16 Year Miracle

Note: I am competely re-writing this post because lots of the feedback I received from friends and family proved to me that I had not conveyed the message I was trying to convey as I contemplated my feelings the other day. I was simply wanting to celebrate the progress we have made from a very troubled marriage in  2007-2008 to how much happier we are now and offer encouragement to all who may be struggling because we are a testimony  that it really can get better.

 So here is another attempt:

This Christmas Day is 16 years since we became engaged so this time of year always makes me ponder on our time together. Although I never ever in my wildest dreams could have imagined how hard our life together would be, I am still so thankful that both of us have always remained commmited to be "in this for the long haul."  In the midst of one of my deepest bouts with depression I remember my thoughts turning toward divorce (which  I had always promised myself I would never consider) and pleading for answers as I listened to April 2007 General Conference.  Elder Oak's talk, "Divorce" was the answer to my prayers by once again filling my mind and heart with the conviction to stay 100% committed to my marriage no matter what.

The next year, things became even harder and many told us we were justified if we chose to separate, but the words of that talk, and the conviction they had inspired in me, stayed as a sustaining force and I refused to give up.  We were always given just enough help, in just the right ways and just enough strength to make it one more day at a time.  There is no way that is a perfect string of coincidences; it is evidence that our life together is a miracle.

Now, eight years later, I still cannot say our
challenges have lessened much.  But as I look at the blessings we have received, including two more beautiful daughters,  I shudder whenever I think of where my life would be right now if I had decided to divorce back then. . .probably living in a broken home as a single mother with one teenage daughter, both of us missing out on the eternal family we are now privileged to be a part of. I can now see that even with all our mistakes, we are living the miracle of a good marriage.

Has your marriage been as happy as you hoped it would be?  Has the joy been worth all the pain? Or maybe you are still waiting have the chance to marry? What gives you strength in your trials?

Truly Tender: Big Sister

Morning Glory,

Thanks for helping her get all ready for church!   I really appreciate you!!

Truly Tender: Canning

For Family Home Evening a couple of weeks ago,  we canned pears.  Everyone helped and we at least tripled the number of jars we finished together as I had completed on my own a few days before. Yum!

Lady Slipper thought the whole thing was amazing fun:  juicing lemons, cutting peeled pear halves into small pieces with a butter knife, and especially drawing smiley faces on the lids after they cooled.

Thanks for helping, family! (Including the dolls)

Truly Tender: Keep Crocheting, Mom

The most excited cheerleader for my crocheting hobby is definitely Morning Glory.  She spent quite a bit of time searching online for the perfect blessing dress pattern and gets so happy when she sees me sit down to crochet a row or two.  Often she sits next to me and helps with a few chain stitches and even learned to make a shell (two double crochets, two chains, two more double crochet in the same space). She rushes up to take care of little jobs she can tell I am about to get up and do saying "
I'll do it; you just keep crocheting."
Thanks for the break, Morning Glory. And thanks for choosing the pattern for me.

Mommy Moments: Knitting a Vest.

I recently found out we are expecting a baby girl.  What does that have to do with the tiny white vest I just finished not long ago?  Well, I have a tradition to make my own special outfit for the blessing day of each of my babies. Even though this is my 14th pregnancy, I have made only three of these: two blessing dresses and this little white vest I just made for our son.
Hmmm. What to think now that I realize my strong feelings that I am expecting a son are incorrect?  At first I became scared.  "If I am not really having a son, does that mean I am going to lose this little girl too?" Picturing our little son in my mind is one thing that has given me hope for the possibility  of actually meeting this little life within me. "Does this mean I don't know how to listen to the Spirit? Was I wrong to trust so completely in my feelings this time?"
These and many other questions have battled within my heart and mind.
However, peace continues to overcome the fears.  I have decided not to feel scared  or doubt my inspiration.   It is OK even if any of those fears really are true.  I know it took great faith and increased my hope when I decided to knit that vest and not wait until closer to my due date. Isn't that experience worth it no matter what the outcome is?  Yes!! I know it is.
Now I can follow my Morning Glory' s lead and get all excited about blessing dress patterns.   I can decide now to be happy and trust in God no matter what his plan is for me.
Did something surprise you today? Did your life take an unexpected turn?

Thankful Thinking: Did I Really Feel That?

I really do feel that new little one kicking around in there!! That is so much fun! We are about 10 weeks along now, My Little One. Hope you have a few more weeks of practice--can you make it at least until Christmas?

Every day with this new life inside me is an amazing miracle.

What is a miracle in your life today?

Truly Tender: Ice Castle

Lady Slipper just LOVED the Frozen movie.  I was really impressed with her very own version of the ice castle, even using the block basket as a base to build on.

Truly Tender: Pencil Playhouse

Lady Slipper asked me to play doll house with her.  I was impressed with the use of her imagination when I saw she was using pencils as the people.  I am so glad she invited me to join in!

Truly Tender: Conversation Hearts

I got a great idea from a friend at work:  during the month of February, ask fun questions on heart-shaped papers and learn more about your family members who answer them.  I used the idea for lunchtime notes for Morning Glory.  I wasn't sure if she really cared about my little conversation heart notes until she started to make sure I didn't forget to send one with her  to school each day.  On one half of the front of each heart, I told her something I was thankful she had done that morning or the day before.  Then on the other half of the front of the heart, I would ask a fun question to learn more about her like "What is something you would like to learn about?"  and she answered the question on the back side of the heart.

It has been a wonderful way to extend Valentine's Day for the whole month.

Truly Tender: Morning Glory Monkey Bread

I woke up to have a fun surprise.  MG wanted to cook breakfast today.  She looked through one of her favorite cookbooks (Our Best Bites) and made monkey bread. mmmmmmmm.  Her dad even said it was better than donuts and he absolutely loves donuts.

Thanks for the morning surprise MG!

Truly Tender: Lemon, Marshmallow and Ice Cream Tea

Lady Slipper has really loved playing with big sister's tea sets lately (Thanks for sharing MG!)
I often look down to see a little hand reaching up for me to have another drink of some special healthy tea.  This time  she brought me a cup of "lemon, marshmallow and ice cream tea."  MMMMMM

Truly Tender: "Let's Chow down on Chowder!"

I had been feeling sick and doing even less cooking than usual (Hubby does it usually lately--I am lucky I know)  and we got out some cans of Progresso soups to choose from.  Morning Glory had a fun time with it even though she had had some the day before too.  She said it was alright as long as she could have the clam chowder and not the potato chowder.  Then she cracked herself up: "Let's chow down on chowder!!"

Thanks for cheering me up MG!  I love being your Mom

Truly Tender: "Sounds Like a Plan"

I went in to check on little Lady Slipper since she had cried out my name from her bed.  She needed a drink of water, and then two more. . . then I tucked her back in and promised to come back to see her again in a few minutes.  I heard a very soft reply but couldn't understand it.  As I turned back and bent down close to her she repeated the words in her sweet and tired voice: "Sounds like a plan."  I smiled as I left. It is so fun when she surprises me with these grown-up phrases.

Truly Tender: Percy Jackson Rivals Harry Potter

Morning Glory has loved Harry Potter books for the longest time.  Actually she has been pretty obsessed with them.  She not only read the whole series but re-read them and listened to the audio books over and over again.     She also continued her love for the Living Scriptures Dramatized Book of Mormon and New Testament stories, and the "Forgotten Carols" by Michael Mcclean which she still listened to quite often, but in the last couple of years not much else seemed worth a second time through, let alone several times through.

A new reading obsession has officially been born.  Her teacher gave an assignment to prepare for next school year by reading the Percy Jackson series during the summer.  That teacher had no idea what she had started . . .

I love being a Mom :)  !!!

Truly Tender: "That's What Little Kids Do . . ."

Several times lately I have heard that very grown up phrase come from little Lady Slipper's mouth.
This time we were playing with plastic storage bowls and lids.  We were stacking them up to make a pretend sand castle and then having the "waves" come and knock them down.  Then we would laugh and build them up again and knock them down again.  Suddenly she paused in the fun and said it again: "That's what little kids do . . ." then we stacked a few more and she added a new part, "and mommy's too."  I am so glad I chose to stop and play sand castles for a few minutes so I could be a little kid too :)

Truly Tender: Stripes and Polka Dots

A few days ago I came home from work and was greeted very enthusiastically by a cute Lady Slipper of a color combination I would never have imagined.  Her petals (shirt) were stripes of magenta, teal and black  and her stem (pants) was covered in Christmas colored polka dots with a black background.  I had to laugh!!!  Sadly I did not snap a picture.  But my mind and heart have treasured up this happy memory.

Yesterday Daddy brought her to meet me at work for her very own Kindermusik class time.  She was arrayed in yet another wonderful combination of her own choosing.  This time it was a pastel polka dotted dress with lime green flowered leggings.

I love finding out what you like to array your petals with each day Lady Slipper!!  I love being your mom!

What tender memories do you have from your day today?

Truly Tender: Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo

Last night as the girls were going to bed, Lady Slipper decided she wanted to go to sleep in a castle (under the slide in her room) instead of in her bed.  I gave her her lady bug pillow to bring with her and she wanted the blanket Morning Glory was using.  She asked for it in a very demanding way and trying to help her sister remember her manners, MG kindly said "what are the magic words?"  We shouldn't have been surprised when LS confidently cried out "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo!!"

Morning Glory, thanks for sharing your blanket with your little sister!

I look forward to many more tender moments today :-)
